Spray Drying

Solutions for poorly soluble compounds

Spray drying is a fast, effective and proven processing technology for improving product performance. By co-precipitating API with a polymer in a stable amorphous solid dispersion, spray drying improves dissolution rates and enhances the bioavailability of poorly soluble compounds.

Spray drying is a very versatile technology allowing for control of particle size distribution, residual moisture/solvent content, bulk density and morphology. From very fine particles to agglomerated powders, spray drying offers multiple processing opportunities. Spray drying also provides for predictable and scalable transfer from the laboratory to manufacturing. Spray-dried agglomerates can easily be incorporated into tablets and capsules by conventional direct compression or dry granulation processes.

Spray Drying Benefits

  • Enhanced bioavailability of poorly soluble compounds

  • Creation of an amorphous solid dispersion

  • Ability to tailor-make particle properties – from very fine particles to large agglomerated powders

  • Provides a physically stable drug form that enables processing of the dispersion into solid dosage forms

  • Sustained, modified and targeted release capabilities

  • Life cycle management / Intellectual property positioning

Spray Drying Advantages

A widely used processing technology, spray drying offers a number of advantages over conventional multi-step processes and particle reduction technologies:
  • Fast, continuous process

  • Suitable for heat-sensitive products

  • Processing of aqueous and organic solvent systems

  • Predictable scale-up

  • Encapsulation - enabling taste masking or controlled release dosage forms

  • Improved solubility without physical milling
